veeam_cloud_logoI have yet to come across a Veeam customer who is not happy with their product line.  And even more rare is to come across a “past” customer.

Simply put, a “past” Veeam customer or an ‘unhappy” Veeam customer is the 2016 flying unicorn.  It simply does not exist.

We take full advantage of multiple Veeam product offerings here in the True North Cloud.  We utilize Veeam One Monitor, Veeam One Reporter, Veeam Backup and Replication and Veeam Cloud Connect.

I am going to focus on Veeam Backup and Replication in this post and discuss how we leverage it to protect our clients data in our Cloud and how we also leverage it to protect clients on-premise data via Cloud Connect.

Veeam In our Cloud

Clients in our IaaS offering have the option to have a single full image backup of their VM’s performed once per 24-hour period.  We use Veeam to accomplish this goal for each of our clients.  Veeam gives us the ability to readily restore full VM’s, single files, disks or even Active Directory objects.  Veeam has somewhere in the neighborhood of 45+ different restore methods.  The most commonly used in our experience are simple file restore and full Virtual Machine Instant Recovery.  Full Virtual Machine Instant Restore is a rapid restore method that allows us to mount and run client Virtual Machine on our backup storage repository and seamlessly migrate it live back to production storage pools.  Instant Recovery eliminates the requirement of having to write (and wait for) GB’s/TB’s of data from the backup storage pools to the production storage pools.  Full Virtual Machines’s can be recovered within about 5 minutes no matter the size of the Virtual Machine.

Custom backup schedules are also an option if the 1 in 24 method does not meet client requirements.

Cloud to Cloud

We also leverage Veeam’s Cloud Connect service between our Seattle and Las Vegas facilities.  Customers in either location have the option to send their backup data to their respective opposite location.  Seattle customers can shuttle their backup data to Las Vegas and Las Vegas customers can shuttle their data to Seattle.  These Backup Copy jobs are managed by our Cloud Services team and run continuously.  As soon as a fresh backup/restore point is created that data is copied to the opposing data center facility.  This is a very robust and easy to deploy solution.  “Set it and forget it”.  No complex configurations are required by the customer and the whole solution is seamless to future operations.  Any new VM’s created by the customer will automatically be included in the Backup Copy job.

On-Premise Solutions

While I have been discussing Veeam’s ability to protect our Cloud customers it is important to touch on the ability to utilize the same technology for our on-premise customers.  Many of our customers use Veeam Backup and Replication.  We manage many of our customers Veeam environments and our experience with larger cloud scale deployments really benefit those customers.  We deploy and manage those on premise environments with the same stringent design requirements and attention to detail that we hold our Cloud environment accountable with.  Our team of engineers will evaluate on-premise requirements and build a solution to fit the clients needs.

On-Premise to Cloud

We can take the on-premise solution one step further and couple our Cloud Connect offering to move on-premise backup data to our Seattle or Las Vegas facilities.  Shuttling on-premise backup data to one of our offsite facilities provides the framework to a basic recovery plan.  As discussed above, this is a “set it and forget it” solution.  Backup Copy jobs will automatically send fresh backup data up to one of our cloud sites and keep clients protected in case of a site disaster.  Retention periods can be set so our clients can keep as many or as few restore points in the cloud as they wish.  On-premise restores from the Cloud operate exactly as typical restore jobs.  Clients can restore files, VM’s, disks, objects, and 40+ other methods!

Veeam has stayed consistent over time and that is a very rare ability.  Their product is not only great, it has stayed great.  It has also evolved over time and their dedication to simplicity, ease of use and reliability has remained rock solid.  We truly value our partnership with such a great company and we 100% trust their products to provide critical solutions for both our Clouds as well as our customers on-premise solutions.
